Spa Sweethearts November Blog – Festive gift wrapping with Rebecca
We welcomed Rebecca and Kate from “Greenhouse” eco – store in Ripon to our November WI meeting. They came along to demonstrate festive gift-wrapping ideas and talk about sustainable gift wrapping.
Rebecca started with an informative chat on the use of brown paper and fabric wraps, which makes both these produces good for the environment, being either reuseable or recyclable. Rebecca demonstrated how to make a brown paper bag, while Kate used the fabric squares, even wrapping a frying pan! The art of wrapping with fabric is a Japanese method called “Furoshiki,” used for wrapping unusual and regular of course, shaped gifts. In Japan when given a furoshiki wrapped gift, you would be expected to return the fabric to the giver. You could use them on your families’ gifts, so they are sure to be returned or just make it part of the gift-for friends. Making your own fabric wraps is possible, using soft non-see-through material and gives you the choice ofyour own appropriate design. When making bags you can print on your own designs and tie them with string or twineand put on a relevant handmade tag, even use fresh festive foliage.
On arrival the ladies enjoyed a lovely hot or cold drink and accompanied it with either homemade lemon drizzle cake or flapjack. The atmosphere was very upbeat and the evening a lovely social, chatty event, promoting friendship. We learnt some useful ideas to jeuje up our gift to proudly display under the tree and impress everyone!
December is also a festive activity, wreath making, giving you a chance to create a wonderful masterpiece to adorn your front door to welcome family and guests. It was very popular last year, so hope you have signed up and ready to join in all the fun. Hopefully this helps to have your celebrations in the bag and all wrapped up! See you there.
