September Meeting – Fitness & Wellbeing

Our September meeting welcomed Emma Spalding from Emergy Fitness & Wellbeing to talk about exercise and healthy diet, before she puts the group through an example of her exercise regime. Tea, coffee and cold drinks were available on arrival, with chocolate & blackcurrant brownies on offer too, homemade by Shirley.

Diet

Emma started by stating the importance of drinking at least two litres of water a day, the health benefits that it brings from reducing brain fog, improving thinking, energy levels and skin. To increase your intake set yourself a challenge to build your drinking habits up over a gradual period of time, to your desired amount. A healthy diet contains five pieces of Fruit/veg a day and balanced meals reducing fat and sugar intake with daily calories intake of -2500 for men and 2000 for women, along with exercise. Also pick your eat windows and quantities, choosing earlier rather than later in the day. Dr Michael Mosley did lots of research into lowering calorie intake to help with Diabetes, to lower Cholesterol, fats and sugar with his 5/2 diet. He has written books on this subject which Emma spoke highly of.

Movement

Exercise and movement are important within a healthy lifestyle, which can be achieved in various ways to suit different people. Walking with purpose for 30 mins, 5 days a week or perhaps strength training is more for you, twice a week. Exercise is known to boost and improve mental health too. For a fun way to exercise you could try line dancing or aqua aerobics for those with less mobility, water helps to take the
strain and helps with movement, also mat work or in a chair. Posture is crucial, so remember to keep your “balloon floating” above your head when exercising, this helps if you suffer with back pain. Chair exercises help with balance problems – Arm slides on legs, stand up & down, use a tennis ball to exercise feet, which helps with leg, hips and knee pain. Only do what you are comfortable with and don’t strain, also REMEMBER to cool down and stretch afterwards.

Momentum

Many of the ladies attending really enjoyed joining in the exercise section, hopefully gaining some benefit, which may have encouraged them to do more regular exercise!
